Connecticut Winter Home Maintenance Guide: 30-Point Checklist for December–February

Connecticut Winter Home Maintenance Guide: 30-Point Checklist for December–February

Between nor’easters, deep freezes, and power outages, Connecticut winters punish unprepared homes. The good news: most winter headaches, ice dams, frozen pipes, drafty rooms, flooded basements, are predictable and preventable with a focused checklist. Use the 30 steps below to protect your house and your wallet. If you’d like a professional to bundle the tasks into one efficient visit, book our licensed, insured team at Carpentry & Handyman Concepts.

Roof, Attic & Ice-Dam Prevention

1) Attic Insulation Check
Pop the hatch and look for even coverage. Uneven or thin insulation creates warm spots that melt snow and feed ice dams. We can add baffles at soffits to keep air flowing and prevent insulation from blocking vents. (Ask for attic baffles under Services.)

2) Ventilation & Baffles
Clear soffit/ridge vents and confirm there’s a continuous path from soffits through baffles to the ridge. Poor airflow is a top cause of ice dams.

3) Hatch Weatherseal
Add gasket/foam weatherstripping to the attic hatch and a rigid insulated cover to reduce heat loss.

4) Roofline Visuals
From the ground, look for missing shingles, lifted flashing, or sagging gutters. If you see trouble, we’ll document from ladders, then repair or coordinate as needed.

5) Gutter Cleaning & Pitch
Clear leaves and check downspout flow. If water spills over the front in a light hose test, the pitch may be off or outlets blocked. We can adjust hangers and add downspout extensions.

6) Heat Cables (Targeted)
On chronic icing eaves/valleys, GFCI-protected gutter heat cables can help. We’ll plan routing and safe power supply and tie them into your winter checklist.

Doors, Windows & Draft Control

7) Weatherstripping
Replace flattened or brittle door weatherstrip and add door sweeps. You should feel resistance on a sheet of paper tugged from a closed door, no resistance means a leak.

8) Window Film or Magnetic Storms
Shrink film is a fast, reversible improvement; magnetic/clip-on storms are sturdier and reusable.

9) Caulking Gaps
Exterior trim joints, utility penetrations, and window/door perimeters often open up as temps drop. We’ll re-caulk with paintable, flexible sealants.

10) Threshold & Strike Adjustments
A 10-minute adjustment can eliminate a persistent draft. We tune strikes, hinges, and thresholds so doors close tight without scraping.

11) Thermal Curtains & Shade Timing
Open south-facing shades by day for free heat; close at dusk to trap warmth.

12) Humidity Control
Keep indoor RH around 30–40%. Too low = static and dry sinuses; too high = condensation and potential mold on cold surfaces.

Plumbing & Freeze Protection

13) Pipe Insulation
Wrap exposed lines in basements, crawl spaces, and garages. Focus on cold walls and sink runs near exterior walls.

14) Heat Tape (Selective)
UL-listed heat tape can protect sections that otherwise freeze, e.g., a crawl space run. We’ll install per manufacturer specs with GFCI.

15) Hose Bibs & Exterior Lines
Shut interior valves and open exterior bibs to drain; add insulated covers.

16) Extreme Cold Protocol
On single-digit nights, open vanity doors on exterior walls and let faucets drip slowly to keep water moving.

17) Sump Pump Test
Lift the float; confirm operation and check for a battery backup or water-powered backup.

Electrical, Backup Power & Lighting

18) Generator Strategy
Decide between a portable generator with transfer switch/inlet or a standby unit. We install generator inlets and interlocks/transfer switches and label circuits so there’s no guesswork. (See electrical add-ons on Services.)

19) Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarms
Replace batteries; add CO detectors on every level and near sleeping areas. Test monthly.

20) Surge Protection
A whole-home surge protector at the panel plus point-of-use protection for electronics safeguards boilers, fridges, routers, and workstations.

21) Lighting Scenes
Program dimmers for Evening / Nightlight to cut energy use and add safety on dark winter afternoons.

22) Exterior Outlets
Confirm GFCI protection and in-use covers for holiday lights and heat cables.

Exterior & Safety

23) Walkways & Stairs
Fix loose railings, reset lifted pavers, and store ice melt near doors. We can add grip tape on high-traffic steps for extra security.

24) Driveway & Snow Equipment
Stage shovels at each entry; tune the snowblower; store spare shear pins and a dedicated, stabilized fuel can.

25) Trees & Limbs
Trim dead limbs over roofs/driveways (hire a pro near lines). After storms, do a perimeter check for hangers.

26) Mailbox & House Numbers
Ensure visibility and sturdiness. Delivery and emergency services need to spot you fast.

27) Railings & Grab Bars
We can add exterior railings and discreet interior grab bars (stud-mounted) in baths, smart winter safety upgrades.

Interior Comfort & Healthy Air

28) Furnace/Boiler Service & Filters
Change filters; schedule a tune-up; vacuum returns. For hydronic systems, bleed air in baseboard loops.

29) Fireplace & Chimney
Sweep annually; check caps and spark arrestors. Burn seasoned wood only.

30) Clean the Hidden Spots
Coils behind the fridge, dust on baseboards near radiators, and bathroom fan housings all impact winter comfort and air quality.

FAQs

Can you bundle multiple checklist items in one day?
Yes. We group tasks, gutter cleaning, weatherstripping, caulking, grab bars, sump test, detector updates, so you get maximum impact per visit.

Do you work in bad weather?
We operate in most conditions. For roofline or ladder work, we’ll pick a safe window and keep your project moving.

What about ice dams if they’ve already formed?
We use safe roof-raking at eaves and can advise temporary mitigation. Then we address root causes: ventilation, baffles, insulation, and targeted heat cables.

Do you provide photos for documentation?
Absolutely, before/after upon request, useful for landlords and insurance files.
